Girly Wishes

I read a little contemporary short story the other day about a girl who meets a leprechaun and convinces him to come spend his money with her at the market. Unlike Mr Disney the writer wasn’t very distinct with his ‘moral of the story’ but I detected in his tone a distinct and, I’m afraid to say, clichéd cynicism towards the capitalist grasp on modern life. Now don’t get me wrong, I can be partial to the odd bit of consumerism bashing myself and, while were on the subject, I generally subscribe to the notion that democracy is an illusion and society is doomed. But I don’t let it get me down. This guy though…well this guy just irked me the way he took the whole silly-little-girls-who-buy-silly-little-things line. Ugh. Why does this bother me so much? Probably ‘cause it might be a wee bit true. Just look at all the lovelies I found on Etsy this week!

Keep bashing away, Roisin. I agree about democracy. But I don't think seeking out the beautiful and creative is quite the same thing as buying things because the ad men say we should.

This silly girl wants that silly band with the feather very much! But I will stomp any man silly who calls me silly... :-)

JJ- I suppose so. I'm not that worried about the ad men, but I am glad I don't have any money because anytime I do it does burn a whole in my pocket. I'm destined to live without a penny to my name but with a house full of glorious nicknacks.

Laura Grace- I agree and I agree (about the headband and about men). You should check out that girl's etsy shop, she has so many more lovely things!

Hi Roisin, I agree with you that democracy is a myth we choose to subscribe to and with Jeff's comment.
For me buying pieces from independent makers supports creative energy in this world and stick two fingers up to mass produced banality.

You don't make rude gestures, do you Melanie? And there was me thinking you were a protege of Jean Brodie.

Sorry Roisin. I don't mean to hijack your blog. But I can't access fancy things like your latest. My computer has enough trouble doing the basics.
